Could you give us in few lines the history of So.2 and the concept and conduct of your project Stille Opprör? Why did you choose to work in solo on this project?
I started making music for this solo project in 1999. At that time I played in both In the woods… and Drawn which both were metal bands. All other albums that I participated in were also metal so I started feeling the need to expand my creative side. I spent a couple of years learning to play the acoustic guitar, getting the right tone, and from that Stille opprör saw the light of the day. The first album, “Prosjekt 2 13” had a completely acoustic expression. As mentioned I needed to play something else than just metal, so the album as a whole became very calm and quiet. Main focus is the acoustic guitar and the soundscape is stripped down, having themes with a red line throughout rather than straightforward song structures.
The new album is a lot more dynamic and sounds much bigger. It still contains quiet themes but there are at the same time parts with huge distortion guitars and noise effects.
In stead of always emphasise the beautiful parts with even more melodies and details I basically just added noise and harsh sounds. These would then make the contrast to the comforting sounds so big that both utter points highlighted each other.
You start with a first uncommon album entitled Prosjekt 2 13. Do you think So.2 will be more popular? What impact would you have on your listeners? What does meant So.2:)?
I hope so. I am very pleased with this new album and I hope people will like it. The reviews so far have been excellent, so hopefully the album will be well received by the listeners as well. Projekt 2 13 was a limited edition release and was sold out pretty fast so I reckon the new album will sell more. I am actually thinking about re-releasing the first album as there has been a growing demand for it the last years.
You’re currently working on several other projects such as Animal Alpha and Drawn. You progresses in musical styles quite different from each other. Are you this kind of artist full of energy with the need to channel it in various separate projects?
Drawn ended many years ago, but Animal Alpha is a very active band at the moment.
I am inspired but several genres so it’s important for me to get to work with a lot of different music styles. Besides my own music I work as a studio engineer/ producer. It’s a great combination as I get to work with music everyday.
What’s your current relationship with former members of In The Woods…? As you keep good contacts? Do you have a/many future (s) project (s) joint (s)? What is your involvement within Karmakosmetix Records?
I am seeing Jan Kenneth quite often. We are very good friends.
I am helping Jan out with the Karmakosmetix label. He is doing the main work but I’m filling in when I can. I also engineered and produced his solo project, “Transit- Descent man on a desperate moon”. There are some future projects. One of them is a noise-impro band wich I am really looking forward to get into. No rules, just noise right from the heart.
Do you have concerts planned soon?
I have one concert planned in Oslo and one in Romania as well. Hopefully we’ll be able to do some touring in the future. The material suits the live setting very well.
Thank you very much, a last word?
If you enjoy meaningful music with depth and details which you can discover after hearing it several times, music that grows on you, music with more than the usual intro, verse, chorus, verse chorus, chorus, and music that moves you. Then, check out this album!
