Biography from the official label Prophecy Productions :
German folkore - Orplid pay homage to their German mother language and evoke old traditions, legends and myth, the music is deep romantic and flowing like a crystal steam. Music with a soul, based on accoustic guitars and truely unique vocals. Flute, mouth harp and femal vocals also support the solemn atmosphere Their debut release, "Orplid" has been re-released by Prophecy Productions, including three bonus tracks. The second album "Nächtliche Jünger" was released in 2003.
ORPLID's third album "Sterbender Satyr" (release date March 2006) is as successful a mosaic of language, music, and representing images, as were their earlier releases. Apart from almost purely acoustic, mostly guitar-based songs, however, their new release sees Frank Machau and Uwe Nolte increasingly aiming for more ethereal soundscapes.
This is reflected in the use of minimalist electronics (often directed by sequencers) and corresponding drum-machine sounds -- a conscious reference to the so-called Cold Wave scene of the early 1980s. "Our music has grown more complex and more abstract," Frank Machau comments on ORPLID's development in the last years. "I think, though, that despite the additional stylistic means we have stayed true to ourselves in many regards." from the official label Prophecy Productions :

Discography Incoming events Videos | Like your previous album, it’s with the label Auerbach Tonträger that you have worked to release Greifenherz (part of the family Prophecy Productions). Are you satisfied of your cooperation with this label?
With the release of our third album “Sterbender Satyr” our contract with Auerbach/Prophecy was fulfilled. We re-upped this contract because we were satisfied with their work and they still wanted us.
On the cover of Greifenherz and on the CD label, you have used the picturing of an animal-headed eagle, is it the gryphon of Greifenherz (Greifenherz means Gryphon heart)? What is the meaning of this image and this album title?
It is a very strong image, less esoteric than our previous album covers. I think it doesn’t need any further explanation. The cover motive was chosen because it already hints at our new musical direction: No more romanticism!
In the review of Greifenherz I do, I describe the style of this album as "…Imagine the suave voice of Fernando Ribeiro (Moonspell) making the prose in the language of Goethe with the vocals effects that can be found in Disillusion from Gloria. Include typical industrial or EBM rhythms that can be found in band like Feindflug…” Do you agree with those comparisons?
The reception of music is a very individual, personal thing. If this is what you hear in our songs how could I disagree. However, I must admit that I’m not too familiar with the bands you mentioned. I have never heard of GLORIA and I know FEINDFLUG only by name. I don’t know what Moonspell are doing these days (do they still exist?), but at least I remember the “Wolfheart” album, which I liked back then.
The sound of the album is cooler and more martial than for its predecessors, yet the style is always clean and clear, established into a neo folk / classical / ambient / industrial trend. These musical styles are highly implemented in Germany and Austria, for example, we have : Feindflug, Von Throndstahl, Der Blutharsch, Nebelung, Die Verbannten Kinder Evas. Are these artists are influences, friends, artists you appreciate?
Actually, I know most of the names from somewhere but I hardly ever heard any music of those people. VT did a Skids cover recently which is quite good, I don’t know much about their other work though.
In many of your albums, you include some German poetry as a trademark. In Greifenherz, you reference Frank Wedekind in Der Anarchist and Rolf Schilling in Luzifer and Gesang an den Horusfalken. Are you passionate about poetry? Did you write your own? Like other artists are inspired by the life as a whole or by the media; the poetry is a large source of inspiration for you?
Poetry is an integral part of our work. We don’t want to use typical rock/pop lyrics, language and music are of equal importance.
We use either poems by artists we appreciate or poems written by Uwe himself. In fact, he writes more than I could ever set to music.
Traum von Blashyrkh is a tribute to the Norwegian black metal band Immortal, does this group has influenced you? Have you ever worked together?
They had their moments but with hindsight the whole “true” Black Metal phenomenon appears rather ridiculous. Just watch their videos … Nevertheless, they were quite original 15 years ago so we shouldn’t blame them for the legions of uninspired copyists that followed. Uwe is still a huge BM fan and this “tribute” was his idea.
In Im Schlaf Mohn, you have used a sample with the sentence: "Nervous tension. Is an unseen enemy of the human mind. "Is this a reference to the band Lemon Jelly?
No, they just used the same sample a bit earlier (If I had known this before, I probably wouldn’t have used it).
You will soon participate to an event in Moscow, do you have any other dates, in Belgium, for example? Do you have other plans for the future?
Orplid will not play in Moscow, maybe some people got this wrong because Barditus, Uwe’s live band, will give a concert there. They will probably play some older Orplid songs but I’m not involved in this project and I have no idea what they are doing.
At the moment there are no plans for Orplid live activities or rather no plans for any activities.
Thanks for the interview, a last word ?
