Fishbrain
Lilyum is an Italian based band formed in 2002, since their creation, we cannot say that the group is idle. It remains whether if it’s because they have a lot of imagination or if it’s rather a bland overproduction for an eventual promotion. With Ultimatum, the group reaches their sixth release and this time Lylium members are assisted by the Salute Records label.

Without question, the group is influenced by smeary black metal from the first times, black metal who have hit the headlines abreast with bands such as Burzum, Bathory or Mayhem. For example, the group released a 666 copies cassette for the EP An absence of light. If that is not true black! To make even more credible their origins, the album Ultimatum was produced in a rather summary way which results in a production deliberately not worked almost inaudible: the group seems to seek minimalism in their sounds. However, the beat stays propped, they play rather quickly and the variation in the raw vocals provides an extra dimension to the whole. Everything begins with Casus Belli, a kind of apocalyptic fresco of modern warfare. With the title Finally, it's the end, the tone is done, we are not here for laughing! Some more overhead tracks (such as Seclusion, Banished To Life) is to remember the great Blut Aus Nord. Overall, I must say that it is fairly complete, there are originality and musical research, on the other hand, I have enough trouble appreciating the smeary production at the moment; in past, it was "innovative" but now it feels déjà-vu.

Compared to their debut, the Italian Lilyum have changed drastically their musical approach, they have managed to bring a substantial atmosphere beyond the grave. Rather more acuteness and quality of production (not denatured melodic death overproduction Gothenburg’s manner but even so quality production) would not be denied. The fans of Gorgoroth, Mayhem, Nachmystium or Blut Aus Nord should appreciate.
