| Already 11 years that the band Dysfunctional By Choice (Dysby for intimate) share with us its musical concept: one man, one fall (each album is revealing, for example, the cover of Travelling In Travel is a hole from one side to the other of the album). For my part, I’ve started the Dysby’s adventure in 2001 with Beta, the first demo of the trilogy Beta-Gamma-Delta. I remember especially having appreciated the title Krisprolls. Today, our friends from Paris released their first album called Travelling In Travel with the young label Gandhi's Revenge: 37 minutes spread over 13 songs.
Anyway, the personal touch of Dysby is always present but difficult to detect due to the change of their(s) style(s). In the album Travelling In Travel, the group offers a bewildering artistic whole, a grouping of varied styles. They mix electronic interludes at the edge of the industrial with titles midway between the energy of rock'n'roll, the sweetness of the pop and emo, the power of neo metal and hardcore, postcore, and a last anarchist touch coming from punk crossover sounds. It must be said that Dysby went to good schools, their influences from bands like Nirvana, Tool, Deftones, Helmet are ubiquitous in the album. Nevertheless, the overload of different styles is too much; it’s difficult to find some cohesion in the album because titles are so disparate. This lack of uniformity joined to their fake simple melodies causes a thought of poverty and less of vitality.
To be honest, at first listen, I didn’t like at all, I could not find the Dysby I had known few years ago. The main element that bothered me, besides the lack of consistency, is the use of effects on vocals that spoils the whole, we don’t always understand everything that is sung. After several listening, I began to appreciate more and more album and regain some Dysby’s spirit in the songs. This has been slow, but it was worth it. Another negative point, the emotion of this album is far too dissimulated and is difficult to access, it’s a pity, it may discourage many. To conclude, despite the sake of consistency, Travelling In Travel deserves to prick up one's ears, the soul of Dysby resides always.
